- The isolated Tangier Island, located in the Chesapeake Bay, was settled in the 1680s by early British Colonists, and most of the current residents are their descendants. The island is only accessible by air, and the sea is home to 431 residents. Island residents speak a unique dialect not found anywhere else in the world.
- Virginia is home to the world's largest naval base. Naval Station Norfolk houses 78 ships from the Atlantic Fleet.

Virginia Cooperative Extension was established in 1941 and is a partnership between Virginia’s two land grant universities: Virginia Tech and Virginia State University. Today, the VCE has 107 units around the state of Virginia, 11 Agricultural Research and Extension Centers, and 6 4-H Centers. Our agents, specialists, staff, and volunteers work to assist farmers, empower youth, guide responsible resource management, and advance the well-being of all Virginians.
